I was wondering, because I have one scheduled in early January. It will be my first one. I hate running, but I know I will shed about 20 lbs. and it will challenge me.

Anybody got advice?

Go for it closer. Several years ago, I worked at a fitness center part-time and was in tip-top shape. Ran 40-60 miles a week and had a 6% body fat. Did many 5k's and ran a half-marathon.
Alas 6 or 7 years later, I have gained 50 pounds and now have a BFI of around 26%. I hope at least that will motivate you.

GD....you are working to hard my friend...what gym did you/do you work at? Good luck closer. Some people take to running naturally. I have a friend who took up rnning last year for the same reason. He's lost about 30 lbs and had no trouble with the La Jolla half-marathon (which is brutal), and will be doing the Rock and Roll Marathon next year.

You hate running so you're going to run a marathon? I don't get it. Why not do something challenging that you don't hate. Plus, unless you've really trained right or done these before, I think these can be dangerous if you push it and it's not healthy or natural. Many people have died trying to challenge themselves running marathons.

If Oprah can do a marathon you can do a marathon.

If you are going to do it and train for it, good for you. I have all the respect in the world for people who could complete one of those.

What you need is motivation and it seems like you have it. You have a goal so that'll make keep you motivated to train.

I wish I could do a marathon but I don't have the mental strength to run that long that far.

Check out Runner's World for some tips and advice and motivation.

3 years ago I weighed in at 295+. 1 year later I ran the NYC Marathon after losing 105 lbs. Anything can be done--I always played sports but never ran.
What Thon are you running?? I am running the NYC 1/2 in 2 weeks and looking at running a full in LV in December. You have plenty of time--I followed the Hal Higdon running plan--free on line.
I will cehck back to see if you have any questions

Since this is your first marathon I suggest you bring a Powerbar or something to nibble on at around mile 15 (most first-time marathoners will need to do this). Work yourself up to 22-23 miles the week before the race and your adrenaline will carry you through the marathon. Get a good amount of water and potassium in you before the race, especially potassium, if you get a side cramp in a marathon, it's over ,you'll be walking to the finish. Also be wary because there are a couple people each marathon that will piss/shit themselves while running so as not to stop and lose precious time and rhythm. Stay in a relaxed rhythm and run as close to even mile splits as possible. Naturally, you will run the first mile faster than your splits since virtually everyone else does it and you don't want to get trampled. Just don't get carried away with it and don't run it 30 seconds faster than your targeted splits.

PS Ex-runner myself, once ran the 15K (9.3 mile) Jax River Run at 1:01:32. Too bad that was 80 lbs and 2000 beers ago.

If this joker can do it, anyone can. And you better beat his time.
